Introduction of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2023

The Cricket World Cup is a one-day international (ODI) cricket competition held every four years. It is officially known as the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The tournament is organized every four years by the International Cricket Council (ICC), with preliminary qualification stages leading up to a finals competition. The tournament is one of the most watched sporting events in the world and is considered the "flagship event of the international cricket calendar" by the ICC.

In June 1975, four years after the inaugural one-day international cricket match, England hosted the first World Cup. A distinct Women's Cricket World Cup was held two years before the first men's event, and a tournament featuring multiple international teams began in 1912, when Australia, England, and South Africa fought in a triangular series of Test matches. England hosted the first three World Cups. Since the 1987 tournament, countries have hosted at least one match in an unofficial rotation system, with fourteen ICC members hosting at least one.

The current model includes a qualification round that lasts three years to select which teams advance to the tournament phase. During the tournament phase, ten teams, including the automatically qualifying host nation, battle for the title over a month at sites throughout the host country. The structure for the 2027 edition will be altered to allow a 14-team final competition.

Twenty teams competed in the competition's twelve editions in total, with ten teams competing in the most recent 2019 event. Australia has won the championship five times, India and the West Indies twice, and Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England one each. Kenya advanced to the tournament's semifinals with the best non-full-team performance.

England is the current World Cup champion, having won the competition in 2019. The World Cup will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027, with India hosting the event in 2023.
